Margherita Queen of Pizza. Let me cast your mind back to a simpler time when the pizza Margherita was but a dream. You see, in 1889 in a tiny alley within the city of Napoli Rafaele Esposito, chef at pizzeria Brandi, created a beautifully simple pizza using three toppings: basil, mozzarella and tomato. The colors of the Italian flag! And named the pizza after the Queen of Italy, Margherita of Savoy. He created this wonder to honor the unification of Italy. In 1989 a plaque near the restaurant was unveiled stating: that Pizzeria Brandi is the birthplace of the pizza Margherita.
